Tipoff: Tonight 7, Leavey Center, Santa Clara, Calif.
Records: Washington State 7-1 overall, 0-0 Pac-10 Conference; Santa Clara 6-5 overall, 0-0 West Coast Conference
Players: Junior guard Kevin Foster, who was the top freshman in the WCC two seasons ago and was also named the WCC Player of the Week earlier this month, leads the Broncos with a clip of 17.0 points and 3.9 assists. After using a medical redshirt last season due to a broken ankle, Foster is a shade under 40 percent from 3-point range (37-for-94). Marc Trasoline is Santa Clara’s inside figure, averaging 11 points and 6.4 rebounds a game.
Here’s a link to a story from the San Jose Mercury on Foster and how the 6-foot-2 redshirt sophomore ballooned to 244 pounds while injured and is now on the right track.
Game themes: With final exams in the rearview mirror, Washington State’s nine-day lull comes to a halt against an amazingly average club throwing away 17 possessions an outing. The Broncos, who have already fallen to a pair of Pac-10 teams in USC and Arizona, are 6-1 at home. If Washington State isn’t already looking ahead to the brawny competition and beaches at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii (which begins Wednesday with WSU taking on Mississippi State and the winner most likely facing Baylor), an 8-1 mark is likely. Santa Clara is coached by Ben Howland’s former top assistant Kerry Keating, who is in his fourth year with the program (48-59).
