Cougars cap a U-Dub double

SEATTLE – Initially, Washington State had one of its least fruitful halves – offensively, anyway – in recent memory.

Washington’s first stanza was only worse. Nightmarish, even. The most unproductive in coach Lorenzo Romar’s era.

The 10,000 purple- and even crimson-clad fans who filled Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Sunday night could only wince while absorbing 20 minutes of bromidic play in the college hoops rendition of the Apple Cup.

But the Cougars – vaulted by an aggressive yet altering defense – atoned with perhaps its best half of the season and staved off a late push to finish off a season sweep of UW in a 80-69 verdict.

Ever-mercurial WSU handed the once overwhelming Pac-10 favorites their lone home loss of the season and their first since February of last year.
